Southbound and Truckin'

As most are aware, we are southbound for South Carolina. The family is excited about going back to SC, and I'm along for the ride because I am on a 4,000 mile beer (Alaskan Amber and Silver Gulch Fairbanks Lager) run for my friend Mike. I was going to stay until I received Mike's telephone call requesting Alaskan beer, and you can't turn down a friend’s request for beer.

We are moving our stuff this time in an UHaul truck the size of an aircraft carrier. Attach the car hauler and you have your own land-based battle group. I think the top of the truck is big enough to land a small single engine plane. Along with the UHaul assembly, I'm being followed by family, which makes it appears gypsies are moving across the continent.

Loading the UHaul on Monday was a tremendous treat. You get about halfway through the load when you suddenly want to unload everything and have an immediate "everything must go" garage sale. Another challenge was getting my car on the car hauler. Playing with different loading angles and finally unhooking the trailer allowed me to load it onto the hauler. I was hoping to unload it at our halfway point in Montana in order to tear up and down the Missoula streets, but if I can't find a pleasing load/unload area, the car will be forced to sit this trip out and strictly ride on the hauler the entire time (it's already giving me dirty looks).

Since we got out a little late this morning we were unable to go as far as planned. The family has been burning the candle at both ends for the past week due to getting the belongings ready to move and getting our house ready to be turned over to the landlords. We all slithered out to the cars this morning and I was ready for a nap by noon. We are spending our first night in Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory. We chose to camp through Canada because hotels are incredibly expensive and gas is about $5 per gallon.

Filling up the UHaul is an experience all itself. With a 60-gallon tank, I'm going to have to sell one of the kids' kidneys by the fourth day of filling this thing up. But look at the bright side; it does get about 6 MPG (Mike, you better savor that beer).

We're gonna do what they say can't be done,
We got a long way to go,
And a short time to get there,
Watch ol' Slinky run!
